The truth is....

... I just caught the Hulk pooping in the pool in our front yard.

... The Hulk woke up soaking wet last night.

... That child might need some more potty-motivators. (In his defense, his tummy has been a little rumbly the last few days.)

... I got less than 5 hours of sleep last night.

... I've taken Excedrin migraine every morning for the past week.

... The purchase of our new home might fall through the day of closing.

... Our loan officer hasn't done a great job processing our home loan.

... The stress from this last month might actually give me a heart attack. Or at least a few gray hairs.

... I cried during "What Would You Do?" last night.

... I was skinnier 2 mos. postpartum than I am now.

... I hope to have a gym membership someday.

... Being a grown-up really, really, really sucks sometimes.

Come be my Design Star!

I love HGTV. I didn't even know such a channel existed until we moved into this house and ended up with cable. Now it fills my life with boundless joy. I have a billion design ideas and am SO excited to have a new, blank canvas to work with!

However, my budget is more "Design on a Dime" than "Divine Design", if you know what I'm sayin'. I'm having a hard time coming up with design elements that fit our budget and still look good..

Some of the rooms I have figured out. I'm pretty happy with my plan for the living room.

It's large for a living room, 14.5' x 18'. I had a hard time coming up with a color-scheme for the room. The carpet is nice, but it's a sage green. Which is on the "cool" side. That's fine, but my taste has leaned toward warm colors -- I've got golds and reds and browns in my living room now. So what color could I paint the walls that would work with our beige couch? Like I said, I was having a hard time.

I looked to HGTV.com for inspiration and found this:

It is exactly what I want. (I even love the rug, but probably won't do something like that.) But I want the room to have the same sunny feel. Superman informed me that he planned on buying a new couch for the living room, so I didn't have to work with the beige! He then informed me that he wanted to buy a baby grand piano for the room as well. He's mostly buying it because I'll be able to teach piano lessons if we own a piano, and if he's gonna buy one, he might as well buy a pretty one. (And we can find them for pretty cheap on KSL.)Link

So I'm going to go with a creamy yellow for the room. I think it'll bring out the yellows in the carpet and not so much the blues and grays. I hope to find a couch similar to the one in the picture -- off-white, classic, comfortable. I'm hoping to get a dark brown/cherry colored piano for the far corner between the windows. I've got some other chairs and a small table that will go in the room, as well. Then it's just a matter of accessorizing! Not quite sure what I'll do about curtains, though. White? Patterned? Sheer? I just don't know yet.

The next room I have planned is Miss Marvel's. Right now, it's being used as an office. (It's bigger than it looks here, but not terribly large.)

I'm going to paint the bookshelves white and the walls a really pale pink. The sage green carpet is in her room, as well, so I thought green walls (like she has now) might be a bit too much green.

I'll keep the curtains, of course. I hope to just use the bookshelves for all the storage I need. I'll get some pink and green storage bins for diapers, toys, even clothes. Then all her knick-knacks and books can go up higher.

(How cute would polka dot ones be with her curtains?!)

There aren't any closet doors, but I'm just gonna work with it. I want to get some shimmery sheers to hang and tie at the sides of the closet. Some day she can have a play kitchen or a princess vanity in the closet. (Having a little girl is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!)

I know what I'm doing in the boys' room, too. As much fun as the superhero room would be, it's just not practical. That room will mostly likely belong to Miss Marvel (or a baby boy) in a few years, and I don't want to have to repaint. Plus, that room is not going to be a play room at all. They will have beds, clothes, and book in there -- that's it. So it'll be a soothing beige, and they've got dark blue and red bedding already. I'll frame those scripture hero posters around the room and be done.

The next few rooms, however, are what I'm still trying to figure out. Take the kitchen:

I'm probably not going to touch the actual "kitchen" part right now. The previous owners remodeled it themselves -- as in, they made the cabinets. So while they aren't exactly the most modern things, they don't scream one era or another. And frankly, painting those doors would make the look cheap. Maybe I'll add some hardware. We'll have to redo the entire kitchen if we want to really update it.

The fireplace and dining area, however, is something I can change. I'm hoping to paint some kind of green on the back wall to minimize the orange-ness of the hardwood floors.

But what shade? Superman and I are still trying to find something that makes both of us happy. I'm (of course) leaning toward the warmer tones -- an olive green of some sort. I kind of have a "Tuscany" theme going in my kitchen now, so that's what appeals to me. However, this kitchen has a very different feel and so I'm just not sure. Superman wants something lighter.

He also REALLY want to do something to the fireplace. Personally, I'm fine with it. It's a little drab, but it'll look better with some decor on the mantle. And I think an olive green would go well with the reddish-brown of the brick. But Superman wants to paint it black. Or tile it. Honestly, he wants to buy a small Greek column, saw it in half length-wise, paint the mantel white, and build a surround. While I admire his creativity, I don't think it's going to look as good as he wants it to. Also, we aren't terribly handy. We might be able to pull of tiling it, but building a mantle takes a bit more skill than we possess.

So. Kinda stumped in the kitchen.

On to the family room downstairs.

This room has newer, more neutral carpet downstairs. Beige and mocha colored. I was gonna keep it simple down here and just paint it beige, but will that be too much beige with our couches?

(current living room with couches)

What do you think? Too much beige? We'll also have our computer and book shelf down there, both a honey-colored plywood. What color would you do down there? I think a neutral green would look good down there, but I'm obviously partial to green. The large cabinet in the pic of the family room is staying, too. So we've got toy storage! That picture doesn't show very well how large the room is -- I was standing on a treadmill in the corner to take the picture. There's a window to the right of the TV that you can barely see, and a closet next to it.

So I need some help!! What would you do?
What color would you paint in the kitchen?
What about the fireplace?
What would you do downstairs?
Help me design it!

He Says, She Says

Superman and I have been discussing decor for the new house.

In the boys' room,

He says:

She says:

Fun, but impractical for the size of the room and unskilled artists that we are.

What about:

-ish,

with these framed around the room?

(from Seagull Book)

In the family room,

She says:

He says:

In the living room,

She says:

He says:

VETO.

(No, seriously. He hates it. Says it looks like an old man's library from the 70s.)

She also says:

He says:

VETO.

What am I going to do with this man?
Does he not love how I decorated our current home?
WHY DOESN'T HE TRUST MY AESTHETIC?!

In the kitchen,

He says:

She says:

Gorgeou$, but au$tere, $terile, and ex$$$$$$$$$$pen$ive

We're not only on different pages, we're not even in the same book!

There is one point we're in agreement on, however.

He says:

She says:

YES, PLEASE!!!!

(If we can find a used one cheap enough, it's an investment so I can teach piano lessons!)

So while we've got a lot of compromising to do (and by "we" I means "he has"),
at least we have one desire in common!!!!!!

The truth is....

... we're closing on our house on Monday and our appraisal isn't complete yet! I'm a little scared about that.

... I miss the days that weren't filled to the brim with stress and anticipation.

... I miss blogging. Having something to say and the time to say it. And the time to comment.

... our electric bill is going to be through the roof this month.

... I felt really old the other day. I've been looking for a specific style of sandal and can't find what I want because it's not in style. And I'm not going to compromise and buy something I don't want just because it's stylish. I am old.

... I look for any excuse not to do dishes. Oh, looks like I need to start a load of laundry. Gotta wait on the dishes. Haven't watered the lawn today! Better do that before I do the dishes. Haven't played Family Feud on Facebook yet. I'll do that first, then the dishes. It's pathetic, really.

... I have a million projects swirling in my head. Packing. Things to be done to this house. Paint colors for the new house. Furniture. Curtains. Decor. Time-tables to accomplish everything.

And finally,

... when you do all you can and rely on faith,
miracles happen.

That's the truth.

random stuff. since it's friday and all.

I think it's been like 8 years since I did a random Friday post. Feels good.

~~~~~~~~~
Have I told you anything about our new house? It's totally going to rock. It's on a cul-de-sac in a great neighborhood. It's got an accessory apartment that we are going to rent out for a few years, but then we can easily make the house a single family home. And it's big enough that we can be there for a LONG time, if we choose to be. It's got a huge kitchen with a FIREPLACE in it.
So things are going good with the house. Appraisal and inspection are done. All we're waiting for is renters for our place. Superman and I are going back and forth on whether or not we need to lower our rental price. It should probably be a little lower to be competitive, but any lower and it doesn't cover our mortgage. The biggest problem is that we're running out of time. As in, time is UP on Monday.
I'm still searching for the line between doing all I can do and having faith. If you've got an idea as to where it is, I'd appreciate any advice.
~~~~~~~~~

My house is a disaster. Half of it is in boxes, and it's hard to be motivated enough to clean the other half when I feel like I'm living in a hoarder's home. There's just a small walkway between the living room and the kitchen and vacuuming that pathway reminds me of Hoarders. I try not to think about it too much.

~~~~~~~~~
We had to replace our kitchen faucet. No big deal, right? Wrong. When Superman tried to turn off the water below the sink, the knob broke off. (Leaving me with no hot water in the kitchen.) So he tried to turn off the main water to the house, but wasn't exactly sure of what to do. He spent about 6 hours trying to figure it out. We called a friend of a friend who fixed it in 45 minutes. (For $75.) That's not the least bit aggravating.
~~~~~~~~~

The next night, I realized when I poured my son a cup of curdled milk that our refrigerator was going out. GREAT. Yesterday morning I was about to get in the shower when I had a feeling I should just check the "free" section of KSL classifieds. (For you non-Utahns, KSL is like Craigslist without the psychos.) The very first ad was for a free refrigerator and dishwasher. It had only been up for 8 minutes. I called, and I was the first one to inquire after them. I thought they were about 30 minutes away, but it turned out that they were right here in my town. So I'm getting a new refrigerator and dishwasher!! The lady said the fridge needs a new handle but works perfectly fine. (Which is fine with me. Replacing a new handle is MUCH cheaper than replacing a fridge!) We don't currently have a dishwasher, but now that we're getting one we might go ahead and hollow out part of the kitchen cabinets and install one.

~~~~~~~~~
How old is too old for children to bathe together? My boys are 4 and 5 1/2, and we're starting to wonder if they need to take separate baths. What do you think?
~~~~~~~~

So there's my random Friday, yo. Tell me what you think about brothers in the bath, rental prices, and faith. GO.

whirring and spinning

Whirring and spinning, all afternoon.
Like little dust-devils wanting to push me along.
The self-destructive thoughts.
The worries.
The stress.
The fears.
Whirring and spinning about my head.

Whirring and spinning, all afternoon.
Like tornadoes trying to take me away.
"Why doesn't this dress look good on me?"
"How is this going to work?"
"When are we going to get ahead?"
"What will I do without my friends?"
Whirring and spinning about my head.

Whirring and spinning, all afternoon.
Like a hurricane fighting to destroy me.
"You'll never be that size again."
"You'll never have enough money."
"You'll never make close friends."
"You don't have enough faith."
Whirring and spinning about my head.

Whirring.
Spinning.
Consuming.
Breaking.
Destroying.

Until,

GET THEE HENCE!!!!!!!!

GET THEE HENCE!!!!!!!!

Silence.
Peace.
Stillness.

No more whirring
No more spinning.
No more doubts.

Only trust.
Only faith, from here on out.

Wordful Wednesday

Warning: If you're baby hungry, you might not want to look at these pictures. If you're not baby hungry, you might be after viewing these. Miss Marvel is pretty marvelous. I'm just sayin'.

Miss Marvel's blessing day.

Giggling at Nana. She's in the blessing dress my Grandma made for my aunt SIXTY YEARS AGO.

Trying to fit all 10 fingers in her mouth.

Screaming with Grandpa.

Lil' Miss Fourth of July.

Do I hear something ticking? Is that your biological clock?

Sorry.

Can't say I didn't warn you.
